The State Government’s Planning and Design Code allows local heritage places to be demolished if the owners can prove the building is ‘irredeemably beyond repair’. No consideration is given to the behaviour of owners who neglect basic maintenance such as gutter cleaning, which can stop serious water damage to these treasured buildings.
At the November meeting of Council, I asked for an update on the implementation of the Expert Panel’s recommendation, that would allow assessment panels to consider this behaviour when considering demolition applications.
